Yellow Dzambhala | Tibetan Wealth Deity Meaning & Thangka Iconography

Yellow Dzambhala (Tibetan: Dzambhala Serpo / Zambala) is the foremost among the Five Wealth Deities in Tibetan Buddhism. As an emanation of Ratnasambhava, the Buddha of the Southern Realm, he governs wealth, merit, and the relief of poverty.

Originally known as Kubera, the deity of wealth in ancient Indian Brahmanism, he was later embraced into the Buddhist pantheon as a Dharma Protector, becoming one of the primary wealth guardians in Esoteric Buddhism.

According to sacred scriptures, when Shakyamuni Buddha was teaching the Great Prajna Paramita Sutra on Vulture Peak, evil forces stirred chaos and caused a landslide that endangered the assembly. Yellow Dzambhala appeared instantly to protect the practitioners. Moved by his pure intention, the Buddha predicted his complete attainment of Dharma, entrusting him to safeguard the poor and ensure that spiritual seekers have sufficient material conditions to practice without worry. From then on, he became a great Dharma Protector who bestows prosperity.

Another legend tells of a kind and generous King Dzambhala in ancient India. He gave so much to charity that his entire treasury was emptied, yet he still wished to help more. He prayed to the Buddha, who then manifested as Yellow Dzambhala and transmitted esoteric teachings to him. Through sincere practice, the king attained enlightenment and transformed into Yellow Dzambhala, now liberating beings through the gift of wealth and virtue.
